«Золотой век ИИ в СССР», или Как ученые в 1950–1960-е годы заложили основы искусственного интеллекта
Ключевые идеи, благодаря которым сегодня мы с помощью ИИ рисуем картинки, распознаем образы, пишем тексты и обеспечиваем безопасность на предприятиях, были заложены до появления терминов «искусственный интеллект», «нейросеть» и домашних компьютеров.
Описанная Норбертом Винером кибернетика в 1950‑е годы сперва была воспринята в СССР как лженаука, целью которой якобы была дегуманизация человека и замена трудящихся на машины. Но вскоре советские математики исправили это досадное недоразумение и нашли способ применять теорию управления и передачи информации на благо общества. «Обеление» молодой науки привело к всплеску междисциплинарных исследований: совместно работали математики, физики, врачи‑психиатры, биологи.
В статье рассмотрим на примере ряда выдающихся ученых и изобретателей создание фундамента, на котором стоят машинное обучение, вычислительная лингвистика и управление сложными системами. А биографии покажут, что из этих людей можно было бы делать гвозди — и не было бы их прочнее.
Претензии к кибернетике в начале 1950-х и ее «обеление» в СССР
В начале 1950-х годов новую науку воспринимали как нечто враждебное ценностям СССР. В четвертом издании «Краткого философского словаря» Розенталя и Юдина о ней написано так:
«Приверженцы кибернетики определяют ее как универсальную науку о связях и коммуникациях в технике, о живых существах и общественной жизни, о «всеобщей организации» и управлении всеми процессами в природе и обществе. Тем самым кибернетика отождествляет механические, биологические и социальные взаимосвязи и закономерности. Как всякая механистическая теория, кибернетика отрицает качественное своеобразие закономерностей различных форм существования и развития материи, сводя их к механическим закономерностям».
Ранее, еще в 1952 году, советский психолог Михаил Ярошевский опубликовал статью «Кибернетика — наука мракобесов» в «Литературной газете». Тогда это было новое направление, и оно, на первый взгляд, вовсе не соответствовало гуманистическим установкам советского общества. Важно учитывать исторический контекст. В то время кибернетику продвигали на Западе как универсальную науку об управлении любыми системами с элементами механицистского и технократического подхода к обществу. В Советском союзе критиковали не саму кибернетику, а именно ту интерпретацию, которую ей давали зарубежные коллеги в тот момент.
Опала продлилась совсем недолго: «обеление» кибернетики началось уже в 1955 году со статьи С. Л. Соболева, А. И. Китова, А. А. Ляпунова «Основные черты кибернетики». А Ярошевский спустя несколько лет после того, как заклеймил буржуазную лженауку, принял идеи кибернетики и даже включил их в свою концепцию «науки о поведении».
В 1959 году А. И. Берг изложил концепцию развития кибернетики в стране в своем докладе на заседании Президиума АН СССР. После этого по инициативе Берга создают Научный совет по комплексной проблеме «Кибернетика» при Президиуме АН СССР, который он же его и возглавил.
Аксель Иванович Берг как отец советской кибернетики
В Оренбурге по адресу: ул. Советская, д. 10, литера А, располагается здание XIX века постройки, объект культурного наследия регионального значения. В позапрошлом веке здесь жила семья отставного генерала Иоганна Александровича Берга, и в 1893 году в этом доме родился сын Аксель — будущий «отец советской кибернетики». Уже в шесть лет, потеряв отца, Аксель переедет в Санкт-Петербург. Там он отучится в Петришуле — это первая в городе школа, основанная в 1709 году, затем в кадетском корпусе, а после — в Морском корпусе, где будет произведен в офицеры.
Аксель принимал участие в Первой мировой войне. Он служил штурманом на линкоре, штурманом и офицером связи на подводной лодке. Он был штурманом подлодки «Пантера», которая 31 августа 1919 года потопила английский эсминец «Виттория» и принесла первую победу советским подводникам. Затем командовал подводными лодками «Рысь» и «Волк», а при подготовке подлодки «Змея» повредил палец и подорвал свое здоровье, так что больше не мог служить под водой.
В 1921 году Берг начал публиковать научные статьи на тему применения радиопередатчиков и радиоприемников на электронных лампах для морского флота, радиосвязи погруженных подводных лодок, использования ультразвуковых систем. Он продолжил и развил дело Попова. Берг был одним из пионеров освоения диапазона ультракоротких волн, создателем отечественной радиолокации и организатором научных исследований в этой и других технических областях. В 1943 году указом И.В. Сталина был основан «Всесоюзный научно-исследовательский институт радиолокации». Его инициатором и руководителем стал инженер-контр-адмирал, профессор Аксель Иванович Берг.
Берга называют «Отцом советской кибернетики» из-за того, что он из абсолютно новых идей смог с помощью идеологической поддержки, популяризации и подготовки кадров вырастить в стране науку, которая может быть применена на практике.

Алексей Андреевич Ляпунов и вычислительная лингвистика
Аксель Берг родился в семье генерал-лейтенанта. А другой видный деятель, стоявший вместе с ним у истоков кибернетики, принадлежал к дворянскому роду Ляпуновых. Из того же рода вышли химик Александр Зайцев, композитор Сергей Ляпунов, математик Александр Ляпунов, филолог-славист Борис Ляпунов. В родстве, но не в кровном, он был с физиологом Иваном Сеченовым.
Алексей Ляпунов в 1928 году поступил на Физмат МГУ, затем отчислился и начал работать у Петра Лазарева, русского и советского физика и биофизика, геофизика и педагога, в Институт физики и биофизики. Математическое образование Ляпунов получил самостоятельно, под руководством академика Николая Лузина в его «Лузитании». Также с помощью Лузина Ляпунов выполнил свою первую научную работу по теории множеств. Этой теории, а также теории функций будут посвящены 62 работы Ляпунова. В Математическом институте им. В. А. Стеклова Ляпунов учился в докторантуре, затем преподавал на кафедре математического анализа Московского государственного педагогического института им. К. Либкнехта.
В 1941 году Алексей Ляпунов строил оборонительные сооружения под Москвой, с 1942-го по 1945 год воевал. Был награжден орденом Красной Звезды за освобождение Крыма. На фронте он находил время на науку — применял аппарат теории вероятностей и математической статистики к теории стрельбы.
В 1954 году Анатолий Китов приглашает Ляпунова в Вычислительный центр № 1 Министерства обороны СССР на должность начальника лаборатории. Там он проработает до 1960 года. Параллельно в 1954 году Ляпунов организовал на мехмате МГУ междисциплинарный кибернетический семинар «Автоматы и мышление». В семинаре принимали участие представители самых разных специальностей — математики, экономисты, инженеры, биологи, военные, лингвисты, философы. Семинар проводился до 1964 года.
Вместе с А. Ляпуновым Берг стоял у истоков вычислительной лингвистики, которая стала основой для компьютерной лингвистики. Аксель Берг был организатором и оказывал идеологическую поддержку. Ляпунов отвечал за научную часть. Научный совет создали после выступления Берга с докладом на заседании Президиума АН СССР:
«Задачей кибернетики является повышение эффективности деятельности человека во всех случаях, когда ему необходимо осуществлять управление... Автоматизация управления отнюдь не исключает человека с его знаниями, способностями, фантазиями, сознанием, переживаниями, побуждениями, физиологическими свойствами и др. Деятельность человека только несколько видоизменяется, и он получает возможность лучше управлять, пользуясь методами кибернетики и средствами и системами электронной автоматики. Содержание кибернетики заключается в сборе, переработке и передаче информации с целью улучшения управления для достижения поставленной задачи».
Он отметил и вред, который науке нанесло неприятие кибернетики:
«…со стороны некоторых ученых и руководящих работников наблюдается: … непризнание априори всего нового и непривычного, что содержится в проблемах кибернетики, со ссылкой на признанные авторитеты, которые не пользовались якобы кибернетикой и обходились без нее, а построение коммунистического SoRuCom 2020 284 общества происходит вполне успешно и без всех этих надуманных, идеалистических, антимарксистских и т. д. буржуазных выдумок. Огромный вред, наносимый всем сказанным, соизмерим с вредом, нанесенным некоторыми нашими философами, которые несколько лет тому назад задержали развитие электронной вычислительной техники под тем предлогом, что кто-то приписывает математическим машинам способность думать».
Анатолий Иванович Китов и попытка объединить гражданские и военные вычислительные центры
Анатолий Китов был сыном белого офицера, переехавшего в 1921 году в Ташкент. Он рос в большой семье — у него было трое братьев и сестра. Мальчиком он был талантливым во всем: стал чемпионом Ташкента по гимнастике, увлекался авиамоделизмом, участвовал в соревнованиях по теннису, плаванию и шахматам. А кроме того, проявлял способности к математике и физике — побеждал в олимпиадах по городу и республике.
Его отец добился приема у наркома обороны СССР Климента Ворошилова, чтобы при определении места службы учесть успехи по естественнонаучным дисциплинам. Так Анатолий Иванович начал учиться в Ленинградском артиллерийском училище.
Как и Алексей Ляпунов, Анатолий Китов во время войны не забывал про науку. Он начал участвовать в боевых действиях в звании младшего лейтенанта, был командиром артиллерийского взвода, затем — зенитной батареи. В 1943 году он предложил новый метод ведения зенитного огня по самолетам врага.
После Великой Отечественной войны Анатолий Китов поступил на факультет реактивного вооружения Артиллерийской академии им. Ф. Э. Дзержинского, окончил обучение в 1950 году с золотой медалью.

В 1952 году Китов защитил первую в СССР диссертацию по программированию. Тема — «Программирование задач внешней баллистики ракет дальнего действия». Затем Китов возглавлял отделы по работе с ЭВМ и читал лекции по ЭВМ и программированию. Примерно в то же время он ознакомился с той самой книгой Винера «Кибернетика» и решил, что наука эта будет полезна стране. Он был одним из тех, кто занимался реабилитацией кибернетики — на многочисленных выступлениях.
В набросках к статье «Основные черты кибернетики» Китов отмечал: «В современных условиях кибернетика в основном теория искусственного интеллекта и новых ЭВМ (не неймановских) — обработка образов, картинная параллельная обработка…» Уже тогда было ясно, как человек может применять ИИ в будущем.

Что же содержала первая в СССР позитивная статья на тему науки, которой на тот момент не исполнилось и десяти лет? В статье высказывается идея о том, что машины смогут самостоятельно находить решения, опираясь на данные, проводится аналогия между работой нервной системы и принципами работы автоматической машины, обсуждается возможность поиска творческих подходов к решению задач машиной.
Авторы говорили, что научной дисциплины как таковой нет. Но есть направление, которое включает три основных раздела:
Теория информации, в основном статистическая теория обработки и передачи сообщений.
Теория автоматических быстродействующих электронных счетных машин как теория самоорганизующихся логических процессов, подобных процессам человеческого мышления.
Теория систем автоматического управления, главным образом, теория обратной связи, включающая в себя изучение с функциональной точки зрения процессов работы нервной системы, органов чувств и других органов живых организмов.
Действительно, здесь шло сравнение живого организма и машины. Но без очеловечивания машины или роботизации человека. В контексте управления подразумевается, что есть регулятор и управляемый объект. Регулятор передает управляющие сигналы управляемому объекту, а тот — передает информацию о своем состоянии в виде обратной связи. Регулятор вновь может использовать полученную обратную связь, преобразовать ее в управляющий сигнал и передать объекту.
«В учении об информации кибернетика объединяет общие элементы различных областей науки: теории связи, теории фильтров и упреждения, теории следящих систем, теории автоматического регулирования с обратной связью, теории электронных счетных машин, физиологии и др., рассматривая различные объекты этих наук с единой точки зрения как системы обработки и передачи информации.
Несомненно, что создание общей теории автоматически управляемых систем и процессов, выяснение общих закономерностей управления и связи в различных организованных системах, в том числе и в живых организмах, будет иметь первостепенное значение для дальнейшего успешного развития комплекса наук. В постановке вопроса о создании общей теории управления и связи, обобщающей достижения и методы различных частных областей науки, заключается основное значение и ценность нового научного направления — кибернетики».
По поводу существовавшей на тот момент трактовки книги «Кибернетика» в СССР авторы отмечают:
«...Винер пишет, что в условиях хаотичного капиталистического рынка развитие автоматики приведет к новой промышленной революции, которая сделает лишними людей со средними интеллектуальными возможностями и обречет их на вымирание. И здесь же Винер пишет, что выход заключается в создании другого общества, такого общества, где бы человеческая жизнь ценилась сама по себе, а не как объект купли-продажи».
Так что, оказывается, молодая наука вовсе не противоречит ценностям страны. И не Норберт Винер, а другие люди распространяют отвергаемые советскими философами тезисы о кибернетике:
«Усиленно рекламируя и зачастую преувеличивая высказывания отдельных ученых кибернетиков о достижениях и перспективах развития автоматики, реакционные журналисты и писатели выполняют прямой заказ капиталистов внушить рядовым людям мысль об их неполноценности, о возможности замены рядовых работников механическими роботами и тем самым стремятся принизить активность трудящихся масс в борьбе против капиталистической эксплуатации».
Сергей Львович Соболев и математические пространства
Третьим автором вышеупомянутой статьи был Сергей Соболев, сын присяжного поверенного Льва, родившийся в 1908 году. Он рано остался без отца, но мать приложила все усилия, чтобы развить таланты Сергея. В годы гражданской войны он самостоятельно освоил программу средней школы, пока жил в Харькове, затем поступил в последний класс школы в Петрограде.
Кроме математики, физики, медицины и литературы Соболев увлекался стихами и музыкой. Он учился в 1-й Государственной художественной студии по классу игры на фортепьяно. Школу окончил с отличием и поступил в Ленинградский университет. В качестве студента он проходил практику на заводе «Электросила», а первой решенной им задачей было объяснение появления новой частоты собственных колебаний у валов с недостаточной симметрией поперечного сечения.
Соболев вместе со своим наставником Владимиром Ивановичем Смирновым открыл новую область в математической физике: функционально инвариантные решения, позволяющие решить ряд сложнейших задач. Тогда Сергей Ильич работал в Сейсмическом институте. Метод Смирнова — Соболева изначально предназначался для решения сложных задач из сейсмологии, например, для анализа распространения волн при землетрясениях, а затем нашел применение в других областях математической физики и теории упругости.
В 1940-х Соболев написал монографию «Уравнения математической физики», а с 1945-го по 1948 г. занимался проблемами атомной бомбы и атомной энергетики. В группах по плутонию-239 и по урану-235 организовал работу вычислителей, регулировал процесс промышленного разделения изотопов и отвечал за снижение потерь производства.
В те годы он также написал «Некоторые применения функционального анализа в математической физике», где изложил теорию пространств функций с обобщенными производными. Они вошли в науку как пространства Соболева и сейчас используются в технологиях на основе искусственного интеллекта для таких задач, как анализ и обработка данных, теория нейронных сетей и обобщений, оптимизации изображений.
В 1952 году Соболев возглавил кафедру вычислительной математики механико-математического факультета МГУ и пригласил в качестве профессора для чтения курса «Программирование» Алексея Ляпунова.

Самуил Натанович Брайнес: от нейробиологии к кибернетике
В 1958 году в «Литературной газете» вышла статья «Мозг и кибернетика» за авторством Самуила Натановича Брайнеса. В отличие от других людей, которых мы упомянули, он не был математиком, физиком или инженером. Брайнес — советский врач-психиатр. Вот что он писал:
«Многие современные технические устройства имеют прообразы в живой природе. Всего лишь 20 лет назад появился первый радиолокатор, и никто на свете не знал, что есть живые локаторы — летучие мыши. В ночном полете они издают неслышимый нами ультразвук и, принимая отраженное предметами эхо, облетают любые препятствия. Эту способность летучих мышей ориентироваться в темноте ученые смогли объяснить только с появлением радиолокации. Можно, однако, идти в науке и другим путем: пытливо изучать живую природу и на ее примере решать сложнейшие технические задачи».
В 1960 году режиссер Сергей Райтбург снимает документальный фильм «Мозг и машина», начиная его этими словами Брайнеса. В фильме рассказывается о том, как улучшить, к примеру, качество каучука с помощью автоматики. В то время полагаться приходилось только на опыт оператора, а сейчас повсеместно в промышленности внедряют подобные технологии, описанные почти 70 лет назад.
Важную роль в фильме занимает эксперимент с собакой, которая становится на педаль, после чего раздается звонок и появляется пища. Мозг живого существа для этого обучается и накапливает опыт: сначала животное двигалось хаотично, затем случайно наступило на педаль, ученые включили звуковой сигнал и подали еду. Со временем этот рефлекс закрепился.

Биологи и инженеры попытались сделать автомат, способный обучаться и накапливать опыт. Он должен был на события из внешней среды отвечать действиями, которые ведут к достижению цели. До обучения действие модели зависит от случайных команд, а после — команды связаны с сигналами внешней среды.
«Так был сделан первый шаг на пути к новому автомату. Теперь принципиальную схему надо было перевести на язык техники, условные нейроны заменить конкретными электронными устройствами. Студенческое конструкторское бюро начало собирать автомат. Пройдут годы, далеко вперед шагнет современная наука, студенты конца 1950-х годов станут опытными инженерами и учеными, может быть, кому-то посчастливится сделать новое открытие и сказать новое слово в науке. Но надолго останется в их памяти день, когда совместно с биологами они строили первый свой автомат. Когда сотни деталей, электронные лампы, реле, сопротивления соединялись множеством нитей в первую модель одной из важнейших способностей мозга».

Построенный автомат в шутку назвали «черная собака». Его работа напоминает поведение собаки в экспериментальной камере. В поисках пищи собака сначала делала случайные движения — так и автомат в случайном порядке включает лампы. Затем собака случайно делала нужное движение, и связь между звонком и нажатием на педаль подкреплялась выдачей пищи. В случае с моделью случайно включается нужная лампа, а человек нажимает на кнопку подкрепления. После нескольких подкрепленных совпадений сигнала и действия собака запоминает, что после звонка следует встать на педаль — а автомат запоминает, что среднюю лампу надо включать по второму сигналу. Так автомат накапливает опыт.
Технологию можно использовать для прикладных задач. Производство каучуковой ленты нужного качества — это сигнал подкрепления. В то же время другие приборы фиксируют состояние материала, из которого отливается лента: это сигналы внешней среды. Автомат управляет клапанами и после обучения запомнит, при каком положении кранов достигается нужное состояние каучуковой массы. Результат — автоматизированное управление сложным химическим производством.

Алексей Григорьевич Ивахненко и «Метод группового учета аргументов»
Юрген Шмидхубер, создатель архитектуры LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), называет «Метод группового учета аргументов» (МГУА), представленный в 1965 году советскими учеными, «первым общим, работающим алгоритмом обучения для контролируемых глубоких многослойных перцептронов» и «предшественником современных методов глубокого обучения».
Работу выполнили Алексей Ивахненко и Владимир Лапа. Когда в 1970-х Ивахненко с коллегами успешно обучал восьмислойные нейронные сети с помощью МГУА, на Западе обучали нейросети с одним промежуточным слоем. А перцептронами Алексей Григорьевич занимался до публикации «Принципов нейродинамики» — в 1959 году он собрал машину «Альфа», свою версию перцептрона.
Алексей Григорьевич Ивахненко написал около 30 монографий и 400 научных работ.
Идеи Ивахненко нашли развитие в языке Лисп, созданном Джоном Маккарти. Также Маккарти ввел термин «искусственный интеллект», а в 1965 году посетил СССР в группе западных исследователей. Чуть позже он сыграл матч в шахматы против советской программы.
Александр Семенович Кронрод и шахматная программа
Одно из важнейших направлений для развития и экспериментов с использованием искусственного интеллекта — это игры. Именно поэтому несколько лет назад такой шум поднялся после проигрыша живого игрока машине в Го — это был последний оплот человечества в игровой сфере, потому что в шашки и шахматы уже равных ИИ не было. В свое время советский математик Александр Семенович Кронрод стал инициатором создания программы, способной научиться играть в шахматы.
Будущий математик родился в 1921 году в Москве в семье инженера. Популяризатор науки и математик Давид Оскарович Шклярский в 1937–1941 годах руководил одной из секций математического кружка при МГУ, и в числе его учеников был Саша. В 1938 году Кронрод побеждает в городской математической олимпиаде и получает приз из рук выдающегося ученого Андрея Николаевича Колмогорова, а затем поступает на мехмат МГУ. Уже в 1939 году Кронрод опубликовал свою первую научную работу, за нее он получил премию Московского математического общества.
Обучение прервала война. Сначала Александр Семенович строил траншеи для защиты Москвы, затем подал прошение о вступлении в ряды Вооруженных сил. За храбрость во время зимнего наступления под Москвой он получил орден Красной Звезды. Тогда же был ранен, поступил в аспирантуру к Колмогорову, но снова ушел на фронт. После повторного ранения в 1943 году был комиссован.
В развитии математических талантов Кронрода сыграл роль Николай Лузин. Хотя в «Лузитанию» он не попал (она давно распалась), под руководством Лузина Кронрод после 1944 года создавал теорию функций двух переменных. Эта теория стала основой его кандидатской диссертации. Свою диссертацию Кронрод защитил в 1949 году, став доктором физико-математических наук. Во время защиты его оппонентами были М. В. Келдыш, А. Н. Колмогоров, Д. Е. Меньшов.
На вычислительной кафедре Института атомной энергии им. И. В. Курчатова в 1945– 1949 годах Кронрод занимался вычислительной математикой и совместно с инженером Николаем Ивановичем Бессоновым релейную вычислительную машину. В 1950–1955 годах занимался поиском численных решений физических проблем.

Работа над шахматной программой началась в 1963 году в Институте теоретической и экспериментальной физики. К 1966 году ее доделали, а в 1967 году началась знаменитый матч между программой ИТЭФ и программой Стэнфордского университета. Она продлилась год: ходы передавали раз в неделю по телеграфу. В результате — победа советской машины со счетом 3:1.
Позже программу переименовали в «Каисса», назвав так в честь вымышленной богини шахмат. В 1974 году она стала первым чемпионом мира по шахматам среди компьютерных программ. Кронрод к тому времени уже не принимал участия в проекте.

Виктор Михайлович Глушков и «Единая государственная сеть вычислительных центров»
Анатолий Китов известен далеко не только благодаря «обелению» кибернетики и созданию в 1958 году самой мощной на тот момент ламповой ЭВМ — М-100, способной выполнять 100 000 операций в секунду. В 1959 году Китов представил «Красную книгу» — проект «Единой государственной сети вычислительных центров». Эта сеть должна была иметь двойное назначение: она предназначалась для управления народным хозяйством в мирное время и Вооруженными силами — в военное.
Высшее руководство не приняло эти идеи, а за то, что он прыгнул через головы и написал лично Хрущеву письмо, его вовсе уволили из вооруженных сил и запретили ему занимать руководящие должности. Также Китова уволили из созданного им самим Вычислительного центра № 1. Но дело его продолжил Виктор Михайлович Глушков.
Виктор Глушков родился в семье инженера в 1923 году, окончил школу с золотой медалью и уже к восьмому классу «овладел основными университетскими курсами» по математике. Он хотел поступить в МГУ, но началась война, и Виктор строил траншеи под Москвой — в армию его не взяли из-за сильной близорукости. В оккупации в 1941 году фашисты расстреляли его мать. В 1943-м город Шахты был освобожден, и Глушков участвовал в восстановлении угольных шахт Донбасса.
В 1944 году Виктор поступил в Новочеркасский индустриальный институт. Он вспоминал: «В первые годы учебы я стал известен как студент, знающий досконально все области математики, а также основные сочинения Гегеля и Ленина». Затем он сдал экстерном четыре курса и перешел на пятый курс математического факультета Ростовского университета.
О том, на что способны компьютеры, Глушков узнал из книги Китова «Электронные цифровые машины», изданной в 1956 году. Глушков как последователь Китова стал инициатором Общегосударственной автоматизированной системы учета и обработки информации (ОГАС), для которой он разработал систему алгоритмических алгебр и теории для управления распределенными базами данных. Михаил Львович Цетлин родился в 1924 году, окончил школу в Москве, а в 1941 году был эвакуирован и работал дежурным электриком поселковой станции в Средней Азии. В 1942 году был призван в армию, начинал с разведки, встретил победу башенным стрелком танка Т-34.
