Выход за пределы блокчейна — «полезный» майнинг и концепция Proof-of-Useful-Work
Наблюдая, как целые страны подают пример эффективного майнинга, редакция ForkLog задумалась, возможно ли пойти дальше за пределы парадигмы — направить гигантскую вычислительную мощь во благо, не ограничивая технологию расчетом хеша.
Изучив собранную Web3-энтузиастом Данилом Ивановым информацию о «полезном» механизме консенсуса Proof-of-Useful-Work (PoUW), мы поняли — искать нужно в этой плоскости. Полученными результатами делится Сергей Голубенко.
В январе 1997 года на площадке distributed.net стартовал криптографический челендж RC5-56. Задача состояла в поиске ключа шифрования конкретным алгоритмом. За восемь месяцев группе участников удалось взломать 56-битное шифрование. После успеха был организован взлом 64-битного ключа, который нашли через пять лет — в 2002 году.
Эксперт в области POW-майнинга и производства чипов, сооснователь HyperFusion Алекс Петров в комментарии ForkLog рассказал о своем опыте и начале профессионального пути:
«Я учаcтвовал в RC5-56 и даже занимал командой верхние позиции рейтинга. В те годы меня сильно подтолкнули увлечься анализом алгоритмов RC, MD5 и SHA два человека. Алекс Бирюков — своим исследованием 1998 года, а также создатель алгоритма equihash/aragon2 Дмитрий Ховратович, который в деле по сей день».
В 1999 году состоялся релиз платформы по распределенному вычислению — SETI@home. Запущенная на базе Калифорнийского университета в Беркли BOINC позволяла участвовать в поисках внеземного разума. Установленное ПО обрабатывало небольшие фрагменты радиоастрономических данных. Люди жертвовали простаивающие ресурсы ПК ради науки — вроде того, как это устроено в DePIN-приложениях, только без финансовых стимулов.
В 2020 году из-за закрытия обсерватории Аресибо проект заморозили.
На платформе BOINC выходило множество программ, помогающих ученым и исследователям в сфере астрофизики и моделирования трехмерной динамической карты звездных потоков.
На волне тренда университеты выпускали собственное ПО. Стэнфордский университет в 2000 году запустил моделирование сворачивания белка для помощи в борьбе с распространенными болезнями рака и Альцгеймера.
Всего запущено тысячи похожих программ, многие из них работают до сих пор.
Бывший сотрудник IOHK и основатель криптовалюты Ergo Александр Чепурной напомнил о популярности пиринговых компьютерных сетей (P2P) в те годы.
«На рубеже 90-х и 2000-х был бум P2P, а первая виртуальная валюта для вознаграждения участников появилась уже после выхода в 2001 году файлообменной сети Mojo Nation. Впрочем, стартап потерпел неудачу, в том числе из-за непродуманных вознаграждений».
Он добавил, что проблемы обычно кроются в деталях. Если говорить о токенах, которые раздаются за выполнение полезной работы, всегда необходимо соблюдать баланс между спросом и предложением, чтобы не угодить в спираль смерти.
Перенесемся в 2013 — биткоин существует уже пять лет, а до запуска Ethereum остается два года. Молодая блокчейн-индустрия наполнена криптоэнтузизмом без тотального поклонения прибыли.
Gridcoin и Primecoin стали первыми криптостартапами, объединяющими пользу и монетизацию. Пока понятие PoUW только приближалось к своему воплощению, ранние протоколы пользовались разнообразием набора слов в описании алгоритмов. Первый из упомянутых проектов выбрал Proof-of-Research, второй предпочел вариант Proof-of-Work based on prime number search.
Gridcoin вознаграждал участников научных расчетов. Изначально система работала на основе PoW, но уже к 2014 году перешла на механизм Proof-of-Stake (PoS), сохранив стимулы за участие в проектах BOINC. Консенсус опирался на стейкинг, а участие в научных расчетах стало надстройкой, определяющей вознаграждение.
Primecoin — первый эксперимент, в котором вычислительная работа в блокчейне приносила научную пользу. Автор идеи предложил отказаться от классического хеширования в пользу редких цепочек простых чисел — последовательности Каннингема.
Тогда же появилось концептуальное понимание «полезной» работы — задолго до появления самого термина Proof-of-Useful Work.
В 2014 году были предприняты попытки направить энергию майнинга в практическое русло. Одной из них стала система Permacoin, в которой участники сети занимались распределенным хранением ценных данных. Проверка корректности происходила с помощью алгоритма доказательства извлекаемости данных (Proof-of-Retrievability).
Следующий проект CureCoin, появившийся в том же году, участвовал в инициативе Folding@home, где криптовалюта стала мостом между децентрализованной экономикой и научными задачами.
Впервые термин PoUW употребили ученые в 2017 году. Работа Proofs of Useful Work Маршалла Болла, Алана Розена, Мануэля Сабина и Пратика Гопалана дополнена в 2021 году.
Авторы сформулировали главную цель: разработать PoW-схему, при которой вычислительные ресурсы не тратятся впустую, а идут на решение значимых задач за пределами блокчейна. Ключевые критерии:
Александр Чепурной заметил целый ряд сложностей в данной концепции:
«Для честности PoUW требуется, чтобы любая задача, выбранная рандомно майнером, не отличалась от случайно выбранной, и чтобы сложность не менялась от случая к случаю. Иначе майнеры будут стараться подбирать легкие задачи и отключаться после решения. Также требуется, чтобы частные оптимизации под конкретные модели видеокарт, или улучшения схем FPGA/ASIC-”железа” не давали большого преимущества».
Он добавил, что в майнинге биткоина в определенный момент была найдена оптимизация AsicBoost, которой успели воспользоваться некоторые производители «железа». Многие из этих проблем всплыли в Primecoin, сеть которой поставила несколько мировых рекордов.
Своим мнением с ForkLog поделился Web3-разработчик, основатель Everstake Сергей Васильчук:
«Для меня PoUW — это скорее название, чем принципиально новая модель. По сути, много решений уже используют этот подход, не называясь PoUW. Посмотрите на Chainlink, Wormhole или Pyth — это примеры реального Proof-of-Useful-Work без маркетинговых ярлыков».
В контексте жизнеспособности таких решений он считает главным двигателем рынок и пользователей.
«Шансы на успех не зависят от типа консенсуса. Валидаторы поддержат любую модель, если в ней есть экономический смысл. А экономика появляется только там, где есть активность пользователей. Работает только та модель, которая решает реальные потребности рынка — не наоборот», — уточнил CEO Everstake.
Многогранность PoUW как идеи заставляет задуматься над всеми ее аспектами. Алекс Петров — про морально-этический подход и призму восприятия:
«Я оставлю пока за скобками эмоциональную метку «бессмысленная криптографическая задача» — потому как она бессмысленна только с точки зрения внешнего мира, для сети она полезна и функциональна. На мой взгляд, всякая криптография реализует самую важную именно для нее (или сети скажем биткоин) задачу обеспечения безопасности. Морально-политическая дилемма — это «правильное» или «неправильное» использование энергии и ресурсов, цели и какие-то «полезные» для кого-то вне этой сети задачи — это то место, где политики и социологи могут спорить долго. Есть много примеров, где расходы и преимущества не всегда очевидны или кому-то не нравятся».
Предложенный Сатоши Накамото механизм консенсуса был выбран неспроста, а попытки его заменить и усовершенствовать могут только все усложнить.
Петров отметил позитивные стороны PoW:
«Проверка результата в PoW чрезвычайно проста и быстра, в этом ее красота. Нода-валидатор получает данные блока, проверяет хэш, сравнивает цель/сложность и все понятно — да или нет. Обычно это одна или несколько криптографических операций и простое сравнение, выполняется даже офлайн».
Следующим этапом развития концепции PoUW стал проект REM, представленный в 2017 году исследователями из Корнеллского университета. Система использовала аппаратное обеспечение для фиксации реальных вычислений майнером с целью создания поддающегося проверке доказательства полезной работы.
В 2022 году команда исследователей из IOHK представила прототип PoUW-протокола. Ofelimos использует решение задач комбинаторной оптимизации для определения роли лидера. Разработчикам удалось заменить традиционную PoW-задачу на оптимизационную, cохранив устойчивость к атакам и математическую строгость.
По мнению Александра Чепурного, Ofelimos гарантированно отсекает возможность для майнера подобрать для себя легкую задачу. Протокол поддерживает широкий класс задач, включая популярные проблемы в области машинного обучения и генерации ZKP. Однако оставляет множество проблем с экономикой и реализацией.
«Каким-то образом полезные задачи с вознаграждением должны появляться в сети, при этом возможный сговор отправителей задач с майнерами не должен влиять на консенсус. Не следует забывать о минимизации приватных оптимизаций софта и «железа»», — добавил он.
Отдельное направление исследований в области PoUW связано с применением криптографических доказательств — SNARK и других форм ZKP. В последнее время разработчики пользуются специальным термином — zk-PoUW.
Подобные методы позволяют убедиться в корректности результата без необходимости повторять саму работу.
В 2023 году исследователь из Брно Рихард Газдик предложил схему, в которой майнеры не просто выполняют вычисления, а создают zk-SNARK-доказательства для заданных задач в процессе. Архитектура устроена как маркетплейс: пользователи размещают задачи, требующие генерации, майнеры их решают, получая за это вознаграждение. Блок выпускает участник, чье доказательство оказывается корректным.
Недавнее исследование Самуэля Олексака продемонстрировало внедрение SNARK-доказательств непосредственно в уровень консенсуса экспериментального блокчейна.
Команды криптовалютных стартапов и современных блокчейнов пытаются внедрить PoUW на практическом уровне.
В технической документации Internet Computer описывается «полезная» работа как архитектурная составляющая, как способ, с помощью которого Internet Computer Consensus (ICC) создает блокчейн. ДАО Network Nervous System (NNS) построена поверх этого механизма служит для координации обновлений протокола.
Другой проект — Flux — позволяет развертывать приложения и сервисы в Web3-облаке. Это, скорее, гибрид вычислительной платформы и блокчейна.
Представитель DePIN использует PoW на алгоритме ZelHash, форке Equihash на основном блокчейне с инфраструктурой мастер-нод FluxNodes. Блоки создаются PoW, а «полезную» работу выполняют ноды, обрабатывая приложения пользователей.
На форуме Internet Computer по обсуждению PoUW пользователь под ником ZackDS упомянул Flux:
«Половина сети занимается майнингом на видеокартах, а другая половина стейкает токены просто для того, чтобы иметь возможность разворачивать что-либо через Docker. Само по себе это, конечно, не плохо — просто я не считаю, что это подходит для блокчейна».
Алекс Петров — о величине проблемы реализации PoUW:
«Сперва необходимо проверить корректность постановки задачи, убедиться, что она легитимна и соответствует критериям сети. Сама проверка результата в PoUW значительно сложнее PoW».
Предложенные варианты проверки для PoUW:
По его словам, проверить уникальность — это одна из самых трудных частей, так как «сложность» полезной задачи может быть трудно формализуема и сравнима с таковой в PoW-пазле.
Соответствие «доказательства работы» требованиям блокчейна в случае PoW — это результат действий, которые преобразуются в нечто, что обеспечивает безопасность блокчейна и удовлетворяет механизм консенсуса. Например, хэш результата должен выражать определенную цель — просто, быстро, без множественных толкований.
Количество шагов в случае PoUW значительно больше. Они могут быть недетерминированными, требовать трудных вычислений или взаимодействия с другими системами либо узлами, что добавляет риск.
«Сложность проверки напрямую зависит от типа полезной задачи. Цель — значительно снизить ресурсоемкость проверки, чем выполнения самой работы, а это не всегда легко достижимо. В данном случае нагрузка на ноды вырастет непропорционально, в разы. Мы получим многократный расход ресурсов не только в «научном майнинге» (не говоря о сложности координации задач), но уже и на нодах — выполнение одинаковых операций будет происходить на тысячах узлов сети», — заключил эксперт.
С технической стороны реализация PoUW оказалась непростой задачей. Сама идея важна и интересна и есть первые шаги, но как быть дальше?
В блокчейн-индустрии «полезная» работа выходящая за пределы сети представлена инфраструктурными приложениями из DePIN, возможно, стоит поискать связи в этом направлении.
Александр Чепурной поделился альтернативным планом в данном ракурсе:
«Имеет смысл начинать с DePIN без консенсуса, в виде DeFi-протоколов, где можно отправить как задачу на решение, так и ее решение, с построением экономики вокруг этого. Дальше можно пробовать совмещать с Ofelimos. Интерес к PoUW будет сохраняться, но сделать его грамотно будет сложно».
Сергей Васильчук подчеркнул слабые стороны DePIN и такой связки:
«Helium или Render могут работать на любом консенсусе — и большинству пользователей это безразлично. Операторы мобильной связи давно используют распределенную сеть и алгоритмы целостности данных без блокчейна. WeatherXM, например, не обладает достаточной точностью для критических сфер — авиации, энергетики. А настоящие электросети работают только с сертифицированными решениями, одобренными регулятором. Мы часто переоцениваем роль технологий и живем в иллюзии их влияния».
Он также заметил, что в индустрии значительно больше L1/L2 блокчейнов, чем по-настоящему полезных Web3-приложений, и выразил заинтересованность в приложениях на базе Proof-of-Useful-Work вместо новых консенсусов. В заключении Васильчук добавил:
«Мне интересно наблюдать за новыми техническими решениями, которые может дать PoUW. Людей не меняет технология, но если благодаря PoUW появятся примеры реальной пользы, это может постепенно сместить акценты в индустрии от спекуляций до создания ценности».
Алекс Петров, подводя итоги, сообщил, что реализация PoUW несравненно сложнее PoW. Она требует решения фундаментальных проблем в области распределенных систем, криптографии, теории игр, а также специфических знаний в тех областях, откуда берутся «полезные» задачи. Количество концептуальных и инженерных «шагов» или модулей системы значительно больше.
Он заметил, что многие PoUW-проекты находятся на стадии исследований и разработки, так как создание действительно работающей, безопасной и эффективной системы — это очень амбициозная задача.
«Вместо оптимальных «заточенных» под одну конкретную задачу устройств [ASIC], мы получим опять мультизадачный, дорогой и неэффективный процессор. При том, что задачи полезной нагрузки меняются, как правило, каждые три–пять лет, редкие живут по 20–30. Потенциальная выгода от направления огромных вычислительных мощностей на полезные цели делает это направление очень привлекательным для исследователей, но экономически не целесообразными для большинства сетей. Попутное усложнение их конструкции рисками от внешних источников задач — это по сути искусственное привитие дополнительных механизмов и задач для чьей-то там «пользы» извне».
