Возникновение эмоций, мышления и сознания из когнитивного диссонанса

В этот увлекательный исторический момент, когда как будто бы стала реальной возможность создания человеком сильного ИИ (искусственного сознания) до того, как ему удастся понять природу сознания и мышления, самое время к этой теме вернуться.

Поставив вопрос о мышлении диалектически (т.е. через отрицание), можно увидеть, что у мышления, действительно, есть один постоянный спутник, с которым процесс мышления находится в отношениях единства и борьбы противоположностей — это когнитивный диссонанс, через который его можно определить так: мышление — это процесс элиминации когнитивных диссонансов.

А феномен когнитивного диссонанса гораздо древнее, глубже и фундаментальнее, чем может показаться, уходя эволюционными корнями к зарождению мозга и центральной нервной системы — и вполне может быть связан с происхождением мышления как такового.

Когнитивный диссонанс — конфликт влияющих на реагирование процессов ЦНС (когниций), требующий специальной работы ЦНС по определению иерархии когниций — т.е. принятия решений. Автор «теории когнитивного диссонанса» Леон Фестингер (1957) утверждал, что понятие когнитивного диссонанса применимо к организму с даже рудиментарными когнитивными функциями.

Эволюционная логика этого понятна: более сложная ЦНС лучше для адаптации, но когда ЦНС организма становится достаточно сложна, чтобы в ней существовали когниции разного происхождения, их конфликт будет парализующим — таким образом, возникает эволюционное давление, требующее механизма разрешения когнитивных диссонансов. Им стал аффект. Аффект — это возбуждение ЦНС в ответ на состояния стимулов, которое направляет реакцию организма при конфликте нервных процессов усилением сигнала одного из стимулов, который подавляет остальные. Это может включать простые решения, такие как выбор между приближением к пище или избеганием хищника, и более сложные конфликты, характерные для высших приматов.

Когнитивный диссонанс как мотивирующий дискомфорт вызывает возбуждение ЦНС, которое усиливает релевантный стимул для его разрешения. Этот механизм и сопутствующее ему состояние — описывают рудиментарную эмоциональную реакцию.

По сути, история эволюции аффекта — это история эволюции эмоций (Evolution of human emotion: A view through fear).

Из этой логики следует, что проблема когнитивного диссонанса и аффект как решение должны были возникнуть на рудиментарном этапе эволюции нервной системы у животных, чтобы его пройти.

Исследования показывают, что рыбы испытывают страх и боль, что может указывать на наличие базового механизма аффекта для разрешения конфликтов, например, между поиском пищи и избеганием хищников (The Evolution of Fear | Fanselow and Poulos, 2005) вместе с эволюцией ранних позвоночных и развитием более сложных мозговых структур, включая телэнцефалон, аналогичный миндалине, около 500 миллионов лет назад.

Аффект — то есть, возникновение эмоций — позволило балансировать воздействие стимулов из разных источников, сложность системы стимулов позволила усложнить поведение, повысив адаптивность, усложнение поведения требовало более развитого механизма эмоциональной регулировки. Эмоции, таким образом, появились как регуляторный инструмент, главная задача которого — гармонизирование стимулов, принятие и энергетическое обеспечение решений.
С началом эволюции млекопитающих около 225 млн лет назад миндалина стала более сложной, а лимбическая система начала играть ключевую роль в эмоциональной регуляции. Исследования на крысах показывают поведение, похожее на когнитивный диссонанс, например, предпочтение ранее выбранной пищи, что может указывать на более раннее появление механизма (Cognitive Dissonance in Rats | Shafir et al., 2003).

С развитием префронтальной коры (PFC) у приматов, особенно симиан (обезьян и человекообразных приматов), мозг стал позволять более утончённые формы когнитивных конфликтов. Наличие у капуциновых обезьян поведения, соответствующего когнитивному диссонансу по сложности подобному человеческому (Choice-induced Preferences in the Absence of Choice: Evidence from a Blind Two-choice Paradigm with Young Children and Capuchin Monkeys), указывает на вероятность, что этот механизм уже существовал у последних общих предков капуцинов и человека, живших около 40–50 миллионов лет назад.

▍ Что дороже жизни?


Механизм аффекта: возбуждение нервной системы, ощущаемое как эмоциональный всплеск, усиливающее одну реакцию и подавляющее остальные, переводя человека в состояние «за себя не отвечаю», оказался достаточен для стаи капуцинок, но для человеческого общества он уже неадекватно груб и деструктивен, что хорошо иллюстрируется тем, что само слово «аффект» в русском языке большинству людей, наверняка, знакомо по криминальной хронике («убийство в состоянии аффекта»).

Вес когниций оценивается по отношению к наиболее устойчивой к изменениям, упрямой когниции, называемой генеративная когниция (Beauvois & Joule. A radical dissonance theory, 1996), и аффект усиливает сигнал той из них, что ближе к генеративной когниции.

До появления человека наиболее устойчивой когницией было желание выжить — инстинкт самосохранения. Это фундаментальный драйв, обеспечивающий выживание, выраженный в таких реакциях, как бегство от хищников или поиск пищи. Таким образом, почти вся когнитивная активность всех дочеловеческих животных без особого труда выстраивается в иерархию по отношению к единственной ценности — выживанию. Есть только одно исключение: защита потомства у некоторых млекопитающих и пингвинов, когда усиленный аффектом импульс защиты потомства подавляет даже инстинкт самосохранения — но в основе родительского альтруизма всё равно генетический эгоизм.

Альтруизм — это поведение, при котором индивид помогает другим, неся при этом личные издержки, вплоть до самопожертвования. Но только человеческий альтруизм распространяется не только на потомство, но и на других членов группы, чужое потомство или даже незнакомых.
Также человек, наряду с некоторыми другими видами приматов и слонами входит в узкую группу животных, у которых существует понимание смерти — и, соответственно, страх смерти как особая когниция (для всех остальных животных ведущей является именно инстинкт самосохранения, то есть мотивация выжить).

У приматов встречаются наиболее развитые и социальные формы альтруизма для животных — например, защита группы от хищников или помощь родственникам. Но это обычно ограничено кин-селекцией или взаимным альтруизмом. Исследования показывают, что шимпанзе могут сотрудничать в нападениях на другие группы, что напоминает человеческую войну, но нет убедительных доказательств, что они жертвовали бы жизнью ради коллектива в той же степени, как люди (The Evolutionary Foundations of Human Prosocial Sentiments — In the Light of Evolution — NCBI Bookshelf). Эволюционный успех чистого альтруизма очевиден — коллективный выигрыш групп Homo Sapiens обернулся индивидуальным успехом каждого человека, который в построенной связанной альтруизмом цивилизации живёт в безопасности, невозможной и недостижимой для предков человека — в условиях, которые для других, более либертариански настроенных приматов, живущих не столько по заветам коллективизма, сколько по «семейным ценностям» (т.е. их альтруизм распространяется только на их ближний круг) тоже оказались недостижимыми.

Впрочем, справедливости ради, надо сказать, что человеческий альтруизм не является волшебным:

Доказательства щедрости, доверия, карательных чувств и справедливости не означают, что все люди являются неразборчивыми альтруистами. Как и многие другие животные, люди демонстрируют сильные непотистские предубеждения, а также развивают долгосрочные отношения с партнерами, взаимодействующими друг с другом. Существуют также значительные индивидуальные различия в социальных предпочтениях. Например, в играх с общественными благами, которые продолжаются в течение нескольких раундов, значительная часть субъектов являются условными кооператорами. Условные кооператоры следуют кооперативным нормам до тех пор, пока другие члены группы сотрудничают, но прекращают сотрудничество, если другие предают. В присутствии условных кооператоров небольшое количество эгоистичных, несотрудничающих индивидов может ускорить крах сотрудничества на уровне группы. Санкции, которые делают предательство дорогостоящим, помогают предотвратить это. Кроме того, люди демонстрируют сильные парохиальные предубеждения, которые благоприятствуют членам группы по сравнению с аутсайдерами.

Тем не менее, характер человеческого альтруизма делает его тем фактором, который позволил людям осознать своё родство как вида, создать новый тип связующих отношений, помимо родственной — моральные отношения, и вступить на этап эволюции человека морального. Именно появление морали можно считать той гранью, где возникает качественное отличие человека от самого умного животного.

▍ Когнитивный диссонанс уровня «моральный выбор»


Человеческая способность расширения круга эмпатии до неопределённых пределов — всего человечества и даже других животных, и рисковать ради них жизнью, имея сознательное представление о смерти, оказавшаяся не багом, дырой безопасности, а суперсилой человека и основой самой возможности такого явления, как человечество (вряд ли даже слоны и гориллы поймут концепцию слонячества и горилльчества, о видовой идентичности для других живых существ и речи быть не может), также подняла и сложность когнитивного диссонанса, с которым должны иметь дело люди, на качественно новый уровень.

Рудиментарный аффект, безусловно, помогает людям идти на риск и жертвовать собой, но совершенно бесполезен для выбора когниции, когда в человеческом когнитивном процессе есть два схожих по силе и принципиально противоположных стимула — альтруистический и эгоистический. Эволюционно человек достиг стадии предельно возможной степени когнитивного диссонанса — конфликта проверенного эволюцией инстинкта самосохранения с проверенным эволюцией, переходящей в историю цивилизации, с его прямым осознанным отрицанием — индивидуальным альтруизмом и коллективной моралью.

При всей сложности и разнообразии человеческих эмоций, их очевидно было недостаточно, чтобы позволить утилизировать возможности, которые для коллективного успеха открыл баг/фича неограниченного альтруизма. Общество, в котором людьми правят одни эмоции, а не разум — это архетип гибнущего общества.

Эволюционная предпочтительность альтруизма, успех альтруистичных групп, с одной стороны, столкнулась с восходящей к рыбьему мозгу самой главной эмоциональной потребностью человека — уничтожению когнитивного диссонанса, борьбе с неопределённостью и нерешительностью. Это эволюционное давление с противоположных сторон направило эволюцию человеческого мозга в единственном возможном направлении, позволяющем на архаичном эволюционном «железе» (древнейшие отделы мозга) использовать возможности новейшего эволюционного «софта» альтруизма: усложнение балансировки когниций, результатом которой стало возникновение моральных систем и сознания, чтобы в них оперировать.

Альтруизм позволяет создавать более тесно связанные изнутри группы, поскольку люди держатся в них не только внешними обстоятельствами и инстинктом родства. У таких групп больше возможностей изобретать новые методы кооперации и двигаться вперёд по пути материального прогресса. Но более сложное взаимодействие требует более сложного анализа, возможности предсказывать поведение других членов коллектива на несколько шагов вперёд без каких-либо визуальных, физических подсказок — т.е. более развитых теоретических моделей.

Более того, потребности сложного группового взаимодействия породили индивидуализм. Животные, при всём их животном «эгоизме», не являются индивидуалистами и эгоистами. Понятие эгоизма, как и индивидуализма, не имеет смысла в мире, где каждое живое существо само по себе. Понятие индивидуальности может возникнуть только в группе — как результат возникновения коллективной идентичности, возникновения чувства принадлежности к группе, набору существ таких же как ты, возникает потребность обособления внутри этой группы, отделения своего я от других таких же. Тогда как живым существам, не эволюционировавшим как стайные, обособляться не от кого — они не осознают одинаковости других животных своего вида, и обособлены от окружающей среды фактом своего существования как автономного организма.

Коллективное существование, в котором признаётся физиологическое равенство как вида, а альтруизм позволяет поступать себе в ущерб ради других членов группы, требует более сложной психики. И существование в группе же позволяет её развить — сознание человека не возникло как самосознание, оно возникло через потребность понимать, чувствовать, и предсказывать других людей. При строительстве модели реальности aka картины мира с целью формирования ожиданий эффектов процессов (действий) до их наступления (совершения) с вероятностью выше случайной (вода — мокрая, жидкая, etc., огонь — горячий, обжигает) в коллективе животных со сложным поведением главной моделью стала модель, позволяющая прогнозировать поведение остальных членов группы (товарищ — подаст руку или столкнёт etc.), т.е. модели человека.

На каком-то уровне сложности модели поведения других членов группы, понимание их субъектности позволяет распознать в их поведении самого себя как в зеркале — это распознание производит самосубъектность.

Ведь, если вдуматься, ни один человек не может себя осознать, представить, описать в терминах и понятиях, которые не взяты из окружающего мира — поведения других людей, животных и даже явлений природы и механизмов.

Таким образом, получается схема эволюции мышления и сознания как побочного эффекта решения задач всё более высокоуровневых когнитивных диссонансов.

  1. Рудиментарный когнитивный диссонанс привёл к возникновению эмоциональных реакций, полюсом которых стал инстинкт самосохранения. Организм начинает действовать в своих интересах.
  2. Эмоциональные реакции позволили развить сложное поведение, которое позволило перейти к жизни в группе.
  3. Жизнь в группе привела Homo Sapiens к развитию человеческого альтруизма, при котором происходящее с другими организмами в круге эмпатии стало сопоставимым по силе стимулом с происходящим со внутренними стимулами своего организма. Возник второй эмоциональный полюс — альтруизм, мотивирующий действовать в интересах других.
  4. Появление второго, внешнего полюса интересов сделало прежний эмоциональный механизм разрешения когнитивного диссонанса, ориентируясь по инстинкту самосохранения, одним из конфликтующих стимулов более высокоуровнего когнитивного диссонанса — эмоционального конфликта своих и чужих интересов.
  5. Потребность разрешения эмоциональных когнитивных диссонансов привела к возникновению разума — абстрактного мышления в неокортексе, работой которого было моделирование эмоциональной реакции другого человека в своей голове для сопоставления со своей — что привело к формированию абстрактной модели человека как субъекта и пониманию других людей как субъектов.
  6. Модель понимания и предсказания эмоциональных реакций другого человека стала моделью понимания и предсказания собственных эмоциональных реакций, дав возможность сделать своё поведение самоуправляемым — т.е. сознательным.
