Тот, кто зажигал звёзды (НФ-рассказ)

В детстве я думал, что, когда вырасту, буду зажигать звезды. Должен же быть на свете, какой-то человек, который вечером, когда усталое Солнце закатывается за горизонт, потихоньку включает их, а поутру, медленно и аккуратно, по-одной, выключает.

Когда мне было пять лет, я представлял, что у того самого, человека, есть в руке пульт с одной большой крутящейся кнопкой. Белая, лакированная кнопка, похожая на ту, около двери, которой родители одновременно зажигали шесть звезд-светильников в моей комнате.

В семь лет, я увидел пульт диджея, и понял, что у того человека, на самом деле, должна быть не одна кнопка, а такой же, огромный пульт. И он может зажигать и гасить звезды, как ему вздумается. Столько крутилок, кнопок и рычажков, подумал я, а что будет, если тот человек, однажды заболеет и запутается в них, и не сможет выключить звезды вовремя. Они же продолжат гореть днем! Солнце и горящие звезды — когда я представил эту картину, я, впервые за свою недолгую жизнь ощутил подступающий ужас.

— Так не бывает! Не должно быть! Неправильно! Нет-нет-нет!

В двенадцать мне наконец-то купили телескоп, и я стал показывать моим нерадивым друзьям другие галактики. Галактики выглядели незамысловатыми белыми кляксами, и друзьям они быстро надоели. Друзья хотели смотреть на Луну. Я — нет. Луна скучна, а я рассказывал им о других мирах, о мириадах звезд, где-то там, очень-очень-очень далеко. Друзья пинали треногу телескопа. Я широко разводил руки, показывая размеры экзотических слонов, живущих на далеких планетах. Друзья радостно гоготали. Я рассказывал о дивных красных, белых, фиолетовых солнцах которые во множестве восходят и заходят там, на тех небесах далекой планеты. Одна из девочек, сказала всем, что я это все выдумываю, и нет никаких планет, кроме тех, что летают по Солнечной системе. Я дал ей увесистый подзатыльник. Потом пришла мама, забрала телескоп, закрыла его в чулане, а мне долго объясняла, что нельзя драться с девочками. Мне стало обидно. Может быть именно поэтому мои отношения с девушками больше никогда не вышли за обычные деловые рамки. Позже, в университете выяснилось, что, я был прав, экзопланеты действительно существуют, просто тогда, в моем детстве, они еще не были открыты.

В двадцать я поступил в университет. Конечно-же на астронома. В двадцать пять, я все так же смотрел на звезды, но уже через экран монитора. На экране отображалось россыпь графиков, столбцов с цифрами, и лишь изредка, я находил в себе удовольствие переключиться в привычный нам световой диапазон и полюбоваться яркими созвездиями, туманностями, квазарами. Я хотел найти ту самую звезду, у которой живут те самые слоны, про которых я знал еще с детства. Я был абсолютно уверен, что во Вселенной есть жизнь, и она должна нам ответить. Но Вселенная молчала. Я пил много кофе. Вселенная молчала. Я тер красные, воспаленные после бессонной ночи глаза, наблюдая из окна университетской обсерватории как ночной мрак постепенно бледнеет и тает и тот самый человек начинает одну за одной выключать звезды. И та звезда, где жили мои экзотически -экзопланетные слоны, тоже привычно гасла, но делала это молча. Я не мог больше этого терпеть. Однажды утром, я закрыл за собой дверь лаборатории, подошел к кабинету шефа, протолкнул ключ в узкую полоску между дверью и паркетом и вышел навстречу наступающему рассвету.

В тридцать, я поступил на докторскую программу по искусственному интеллекту. Я решил, что раз моего разума и сил не хватило, нужно создать другой инструмент, и этим инструментом должен быть искусственный разум. Он подскажет мне, где искать ту самую звезду.

В пятьдесят, я получил премию Тьюринга, это вроде Нобелевской премии, только для компьютерных наук. Мои программы могли решать математические задачи, анализировать финансовые рынки, подсказывать где искать нефть, и даже помогать мне расшифровывать некоторые снимки галактик (впрочем я мог делать это ничуть не хуже, дело было лишь во времени). Мои разработки сделали меня очень богатым человеком, но Вселенной на это было все равно, и она, по-прежнему, снисходительно молчала.

В шестьдесят пять, доход от моих финансовых роботов позволил мне выкупить сорок два процента от всех суперкомпьютерных мощностей на планете. На целый месяц! Этого оказалось достаточно. Когда я увидел сообщение, что тренировка самой большой в мире большой языковой модели завершена, я, почему-то, решил не тестировать ее стандартными вопросами на проверку уровня IQ. Я подошел к терминалу и вбил лишь одну фразу:

“Покажи всем людям на Земле красоту и величие тех миров!”

Господин профессор, — оклик раздался откуда-то справа. — Помогите мне дотащить его!

Профессор Зиммерли повернул голову и вынырнул из своего оцепенения. От сидения на холодном бетонном полу его мышцы затекли, и он не сразу смог встать. Наконец, справившись с затекшими ногами, он пошел навстречу звуку. Зиммерли провел несколько раз фонариком, но луч уходил куда-то вдаль, в бесконечность коридора. Он махнул рукой еще раз, и тут, в луче света, оказалось лицо миловидной девушки. Она волокла на себе молодого парня в военной форме.

— Помогите мне, прошу вас — захлебывалась от крика девушка.

Профессор аккуратно перехватил обмякшее тело и положил на расстеленный рядом спальный мешок. Выпрямившись, он пристально посмотрел в глаза девушки.

— Не смотрите так на мои зрачки, меня не задело — буркнула она.

Профессор нахмурился.

— Вы добрались до Здания? — спросил он.

Девушка мотнула головой.

— Встретили роботов по дороге? Да. — кивнула она в ответ, стараясь не смотреть на собеседника.

—Газовая граната. — нехотя продолжила девушка. Сколько ему осталось до того… она запнулась. До того, как он сойдет в лимб?

Профессор потер затылок.

— Если он выключился почти сразу, значит наглотался газа прилично. Что с тобой?

— Я задержала дыхание, а потом надела маску — в голосе девушки сквозило раздражение. Я же вам сказала, меня не задело — с вызовом добавила она усаживаясь на холодный пол.

— Что-то спать хочется, мы уморились на этой вылазке — негромко добавила девушка, затем зевнула закрыв глаза.

Профессор наклонился над ней нахмурившись, провел руку в карман, нащупал там что, и, вынув руку, резко замахнулся на девушку. Она инстинктивно выбросила вперед согнутый локоть, словно защищаясь от удара, однако мужчина хлопнул ее кулаком по плечу.

— Ай… что вы делаете? — голос девушки был тихим и неестественно слабым.

— Метамфетамин — сухо ответил профессор.

— Откуда он у вас?

— Украл у военных — он лишь пожал плечами.

— Мне не нужно, я прекрасно себя чувствую! — выкрикнула девушка.

— Ну еще бы, усмехнулся профессор. — Теперь-то точно вы будете отлично себя чувствовать.

— Я же вам говорила, я не дышала газом. — девушка села обняв руками колени. Ее отрешенный взгляд был направлен вперед. Она молчала. Так прошло секунд десять. Затем, она не сделав ни движения, задала вопрос.

— На сколько меня хватит? — голос девушки звучал сухо и обреченно.

— Ну на пару часов точно. — таким же сухим голосом ответил Зиммерли.

— А потом в лимб? Я… я не хочу. Профессор, мы с Маркусом видели странные вещи. Вы должны это увидеть сами. Давайте сделаем вылазку, еще одну на поверхность. — бормотала девушка.

— Вы дошли до Университета? — задал вопрос Зиммерли. Девушка отрицательно покачала головой.

— Больше никаких вылазок! — взорвался профессор. Мы не можем терять по два человека за один выход, нас осталось всего ничего!

— Меня вы уже списали, Зиммерли — грустно хмыкнула девушка и уставилась на стену.

— Да, моя дорогая, вы тоже уснете и сойдете в лимб…

Профессор уселся рядом с девушкой. Он тихо бормотал, по старой привычке разговаривая сам с собой. Девушка слышала лишь обрывки фраз “выжил…. в бункерах… в России… Китае… мог… мы… продержаться... все… один. я… роботы… последний на Земле…”

В этот момент раздался оглушительный грохот. Люминесцентная лампа, словно приняв на себя всю мощь этого удара, ярко вспыхнула, на секунду осветив осунувшееся лицо мужчины, а затем лопнула, с шелестом разлетающихся осколков. Девушка испустила громкий крик.

— Что это?

— Вероятно, роботы проследовали за вами, и нашли вход в бункер. Теперь они вскрыли дверь.

— Валим отсюда! Быстро.

Профессор, с удивительной ловкостью схватил лежащего солдата и потащил к лифту. По коридору раздавался механический топот от которого дрожал пол бункера.

— Скорее, они уже здесь! Вот они. — выкрикнула девушка запрыгивая в лифт вслед за профессором. Профессор втащил тело солдата и захлопнул дверь прямо перед железными носами приближающихся роботов. Лифт скрипнул и помчался вниз. Мужчина и девушка глубоко дышали.

Наконец, он с сильным ударом остановился, и спутники вылезли из крохотной кабинки. Профессор открыл металлический шкаф, стоящий рядом с лифтом и вырвал кабель.

— Все, теперь лифт отключен. Это даст нам немного времени — произнес он.

Пробравшись через неосвещенный коридор, они перешли за огромную металлическую дверь бункера, после чего профессор прокрутил три рукоятки, надежно ее заблокировав.

Помещение, где они находились было освещено мягким белым цветом. В ряд лежали люди, большая их часть была одета в военную форму. Профессор протащил тело солдата и уложил его сбоку в крайний ряд. Поднявшись с пола, он бросил взгляд на девушку, на ее раскрасневшееся лицо. “Вот так, вот так все и кончится для нас тоже” с горечью подумал он.

Девушка поправила растрепавшиеся волосы.

— Почему они нас не убивают а отправляют в это странное состояние, между жизнью и смертью? В лимб? Не проще ли было им нас просто перебить.

Зиммерли развел руками.

— Ты же знакома с тремя законами робототехники Азимова?

— Конечно знакома — улыбнулась девушка. Вы же, профессор Зиммерли, про них и рассказывали на лекциях.

— Так вот, у меня есть версия. Я не знаю насколько она правильная, но она все объясняет. Когда кто-то — при этих словах профессор нахмурился. — Кто-то создал этих роботов, он заложил в них правило, что они не могут убивать людей.

— И?

— По видимому, роботы нашли способ обойти этот запрет — вымолвил профессор. Они нас не убивают, они просто погружают нас в анабиоз… один удар сердца в десять минут, но формально же человека можно считать живым при таком, с позволения сказать, существовании.

— Ха — грустно усмехнулась девушка, наверное тот, кто их обучал был юристом по профессии.

— Не думаю, мрачно ответил профессор. Без технических знаний у этого… -- профессор тяжело вздохнул -- у этого негодяя бы ничего не вышло.

Девушка посмотрела прямо в глаза профессору.

— Я должна вам кое что рассказать.

Профессор вздрогнул, но тут же взял себя в руки.

— Да.. да… рассказывайте.

Когда мы с Маркусом вышли на поверхность мы увидели странную картину. Тысячи, а может быть десятки тысяч роботов… они несли стеклянные блоки. Передавали их друг другу, словно цепочка муравьев. А внутри этих блоков… внутри…

— Что, оживился профессор?

— Внутри этих блоков, продолжила девушка были… люди.

— Профессор взял ее за руку и посмотрел прямо в глаза.

— Ты… ты уверена? Это точно не померещилось от газа?

— Я абсолютно уверена в этом. Маркус тогда сказал…

Зиммерли бросился к двери и начал раскручивать рукоятки.

— Профессор, вы сошли с ума, там же они! — закричала девушка.

Зиммерли не ответил. Он, кряхтя от напряжения раскручивал последнюю рукоятку. Наконец, она издала глухой звук удара и остановилась. Профессор со стоном толкнул дверь от себя, она нехотя поддалась. Девушка бросилась на дверь, пытаясь помешать профессору.

— Нет! нет! нет! — не впускайте их сюда, профессор. Нет, не надо! — кричала она.

Зиммерли схватил ее за руку и потащил за собой.

— Ты должна это увидеть! Идем!

Подтащив ее к двери лифта, профессор, второй рукой поднял с земли кабель, открыл шкаф и, быстрым движением воткнул кабель куда то внутрь. Из шкафа посыпались искры, а за спиной раздался металлический скрежет. Тем не менее, дверь услужливо открылась.

— Там роботы, не надо — шептала девушка. Зиммерли прижал ее к себе.

— Не бойся, они на минус третьем, там где мы были… мы проедем его на скорости. Надеюсь, они не нашли выход из лифтового штрека.

— Зачем, зачем нам туда? — глаза девушки округлились от ужаса.

— Увидишь! — крикнул Профессор ей в ухо, пытаясь перекричать рев мчащегося лифта.

Кабинка остановилась с резким ударом. Свет погас, но Зиммерли, уперевшись в тугую дверь сумел ее продавить. Схватив уже слабеющую девушку за руку он протащил ее по короткому коридору. В конце этого коридора стояла такая-же массивная дверь. Потратив пару минут на раскручивание рукояток, профессор наконец смог ее открыть.

Они вышли на поверхность. Их истосковавшимся по солнечному свет глазам, предстала поистине поразительная картина. В ясный солнечный день весь небосвод был украшен звездами. Они поднимались из-за горизонта огромными хвостатыми шарами, затем, через пару минут хвосты тускнели, испускали сноп искр, разделялись на несколько огоньков, и вспыхивали повторно небольшими но яркими звездочками, чтобы через пару минут, окончательно погаснув, раствориться в пучинах космического холода.

— Что? Что все это значит? — вымолвила девушка.

Зиммерли не ответил, его пробирал смех, точнее нечто среднее между смехом и плачем.

— Послушай, тот самый человек все-таки заболел, и уже не может больше выполнять свою работу. Вот что произошло.

— Какой человек?

— Тот самый, который зажигает звезды. Посмотри, звезды светят днем! — Радостно улыбался профессор показывая рукой

Девушка опрыгнула от профессора. — Да он же сумасшедший. -- подумала она. — Свихнулся от пребывания под землей, или всегда был таким. Не зря про его безумие ходили слухи по всему университету.

Она еще раз посмотрела на небо.

— Это же не звезды… Это… ракеты? -- неуверенно произнесла она

Зиммерли подмигнул ей и сделал широкий жест рукой, словно отмеряя поклон.

— Да это ракеты, и знаешь куда они нас заберут?

— Куда?

— К звездам. К новым мирам. Роботы не убивают нас, они погружают в лимб, чтобы мы могли пережить это путешествие, путешествие к звездам которое займет тысячи лет.

— Я… я не хочу к звездам — заплетающимся языком произнесла девушка, мне хорошо и здесь, вот только спать хочется. — сказав это, она повалилась на землю. Очевидно, действие стимулятора закончилось, и отравление начало проявляться опять.

Профессор подошел и взял ее за руку. Она уже спала. Он бросил взгляд на распластавшееся звездное небо, затем огляделся вокруг. Он был окружен роботами, они уже направили на него раструбы газовых ружей.

Зиммерли указал пальцем на небо. — Туда… меня... туда! пожалуйста! Вон там... там она... моя звезда... моя... звездочка -- успел пробормотать профессор прежде чем окончательно рухнуть на траву.
