В начале этого года группа Замански опубликовала результаты, показывающие, что свободный ИИ стабильно лучше определяет боль у овец, чем даже высококвалифицированные ветеринары и эксперты по поведению. Алгоритм правильно определил, что овца перенесла болезненную операцию, в 82% случаев; четыре высококвалифицированных человека, которым показали морды овец, сделали это правильно только в 70% случаев.

Тем не менее, Замански предупреждает, что компьютер, который самостоятельно решает, что искать на изображениях, может ухватиться за неправильные элементы. Классический пример — часы на заднем плане. Она и ее команда провели сотни часов, просматривая записи игр и драк кошек в кошачьем кафе в Лос-Анджелесе, тщательно кодируя каждую деталь выражений морд животных, одновременно выискивая в их поведении признаки того, что они, по сути, «счастливы» — или нет.

Работа показала, что кошки демонстрируют целых 276 различных выражений лица. Теперь Флоркевич объединилась с Мартвелом и Замански, чтобы применить ИИ к своим данным. В похожей работе команда Замански обучила свой ИИ на фотографиях лабрадоров-ретриверов, которые либо с нетерпением ждали угощения, либо видели его, но не могли дотянуться. ИИ смог успешно определить, была ли собака «счастлива» или «расстроена» в 89% случаев. Он был столь же успешен в определении «счастливых» и «расстроенных» лошадей. В том же эксперименте некоторых лошадей снимали на видео, когда те обнаруживали, что ожидаемого угощения всё-таки нет. Исследователи обнаружили, что ИИ смог правильно классифицировать лошадь как «расстроенную» или «разочарованную» в 61% случаев.
