Может ли код Биткойна быть изменён по прихоти влиятельных лиц?

Насколько защищен код Биткойна от политического или финансового давления?

В этом году во многих информационных источниках прошла маркетинговая кампания стоимостью 5 миллионов долларов, пропагандирующая изменение кода Биткойна и переход его с алгоритма proof-of-work (PoW) на proof-of-stake (PoS).

Рекламный ролик ниже был подготовлен Greenpeace и Рабочей группой по вопросам окружающей среды (EWG) и негласно финансировался сооснователем Ripple Labs Крисом Ларсеном. И людям со стороны он может показаться довольно убедительным, как вы можете видеть:

Однако, каким бы впечатляющим оно ни казалось, с этим видео есть небольшая проблема: это неправда.

Оно, можно сказать, даже мошенническое в своих утверждениях, и если бы Биткойн был централизованной структурой (любого рода), то уже давно подал бы на авторов в суд. Похоже, что оно рассчитано на тех, кто не имеет реального представления о том, как Биткойн работает, а таких людей, конечно, еще много.

Все заявления об экологии, выбросах и энергопотреблении уже полностью развенчаны нашими коллегами со всего мира. Так что нет необходимости вновь обращаться к этой теме.

Однако в ролике несложно заметить и еще одно популярное заблуждение: столь же пугающую, сколь интригующую, идею о том, что код Биткойна можно изменить по прихоти нескольких людей. Вот цитата:

Действительно ли код Биткойна — того самого алгоритма, что обеспечивает ценность актива за счет цифрового дефицита, основанного на математике и законах термодинамики, — можно просто изменить по прихоти горстки богатых и влиятельных людей?

Если так, то это ужасающая мысль, которая полностью противоречит всему тому, за что выступает Биткойн. Возможно ли это на самом деле?

Изменения в кодовой базе Bitcoin Core действительно возможны и производились уже не раз.

В программный код вносились относительно небольшие изменения — как Segwit и Taproot, — призванные улучшить безопасность Биткойна, управление блоками и возможности программирования.

Обычно такие обновления реализуются через софтфорк — процесс, в результате которого сеть получает возможность обрабатывать блоки нового вида и при этом сохраняет поддержку старых блоков.

При таких изменениях рядовой пользователь не заметит никакой разницы.

Но были и гораздо более серьезные изменения, затрагивавшие саму ткань инфраструктуры кода. Такие изменения можно реализовать только через хардфорк, в результате которого все блоки прежнего формата становятся недействительными в соответствии с новыми правилами сети, что приводит к образованию двух блокчейнов — старого и нового. Все пользователи и узлы новой ветки должны обновиться до последней версии протокола.

Биткойн уже сталкивался с такими форками; наиболее известны из них Bitcoin Cash (BCH) и, позднее, Bitcoin SV (BSV), который уже был, по сути, форком форка. Несмотря на весь шум, создававшийся сторонниками этих новых монет, эти ответвления от основного Биткойна (как и многие другие) практически провалились, парадоксальным образом лишь усилив оригинальный протокол.

Предложение Greenpeace подразумевает очень серьезное изменение в протоколе, осуществить которое будет крайне сложно.

У кого-то может возникнуть соблазн указать на недавний переход от PoW к PoS в TON Coin. Но по архитектуре это изначально была двойная система, в которой PoW предназначался, по сути, только для управления первичным распределением перед запланированным переходом на PoS. Это не то же самое.

Ближайший реальный пример — это переход Ethereum с proof-of-work на proof-of-stake («Ethereum 2.0») — процесс, начавшийся так давно, что я уже даже не помню, когда о нем впервые было объявлено, и до сих пор еще не завершенный, несмотря на недавнюю активацию PoS в основной сети. Первоначально этот переход планировалось завершить к 2020 году, но задача настолько технически сложная, что сроки реализации неоднократно переносились, и в итоге в основной сети PoS алгоритм был активирован только в сентябре 2022.

Этот пример показывает, что даже при наличии достаточной «политической воли», денег и концентрации на этом направлении как приоритетном, на реализацию такого перехода могут уйти годы.

Так есть ли какой-то смысл в заявлении Greenpeace? Должны ли мы рассмотреть возможность внесения «экологически безопасных» изменений в код Биткойна?

В самом этом вопросе сконцентрировано столько заблуждений, что трудно понять, какой пункт опровергать первым.

Экологические претензии к Биткойну уже были развенчаны многократно и мы знаем даже, что Биткойн может фактически способствовать внедрению чистой энергии и сверхэффективных сетей, которые до сих пор были невозможны.

И хотя верно, что POS потребляет значительно меньше энергии, чем POW, это достигается ценой безопасности. Да, PoS — тоже довольно безопасная система, но я думаю, что даже самые ярые критики Биткойна согласятся, что она уступает в безопасности PoW.

Итак, действительно ли мы хотим сменить глобальную денежную систему с «супербезопасной» на «относительно безопасную», если в этом нет реальной необходимости?

Я думаю, вряд ли.

Это большие дискуссионные вопросы сами по себе, однако настоящий вопрос, мне кажется, состоит скорее в том, возможно ли в принципе внести подобные изменения в Биткойн так, как это преподносит Greenpeace.

Ответ — ясное и безусловное «нет».

Но почему нет?

Те, кто работает в криптоиндустрии долгое время, не просто так рассматривают Биткойн как совершенно отдельный, единственный в своем роде актив, и на понимание этого обычно требуется время. Часто такой период познания может включать в себя также попытку «исправить Биткойн» или изучение множества других альткойнов.

Но дело в том, что Биткойн — это единственная по-настоящему децентрализованная глобальная финансовая сеть, находящаяся вне какого-либо централизованного контроля. Было бы интересно узнать, что, по мнению Greenpeace, такие люди, как Джек Дорси или Элон Маск, могут сделать, чтобы повлиять на ее протокол.

Красота Биткойна — и вся его суть — заключается как раз в том, что ни один человек, компания или даже государство не может его купить или манипулировать им. Этого свойства не было ни у одной системы в истории человечества (и это же часто неправильно понимают и недооценивают критики Биткойна).

Так что, даже если заставить всех Дорси и Масков мира согласиться на эти изменения (что само по себе довольно маловероятно), это абсолютно ничего не даст для достижения этой цели. Они просто не обладают влиянием для этого.

Однако это теоретически возможно со многими, если не с подавляющим большинством, альткойнов. POS-системы гораздо ближе к традиционной фиатной «кантильоновой» системе, чем может показаться на первый взгляд.

Например, управление в них часто осуществляется с помощью той или иной формы стейкинга, что означает, что обладатели большого капитала могут фактически скупить большие объемы актива и нарастить вес своего голоса до такой степени, чтобы существенно влиять на протокол сети.

Но и во многих проектах, называющих себя децентрализованными, тоже есть свои «лидеры», способные прямо или косвенно влиять на направление развития проекта, часто в непропорционально большой мере. Это влияние не всегда выражается явно.

Какие имена сразу приходят на ум в связи с Cardano (ADA), XRP, Terra (LUNA)? Конечно, есть и много других примеров.

Это всё proof-of-stake койны, однако то же верно и в отношении proof-of-work альткойнов, даже тех, что были созданы на основе оригинального блокчейна Биткойна.

Вспомните хоть Роджера Вера из Bitcoin Cash или Крейга Райта из Bitcoin SV.

Но вы не можете переносить всё то же самое на Биткойн, потому что он не имеет какого-то признанного лидера. Единой точки отказа, на которую можно было бы надавить, просто не существует.

Даже Ethereum, единственный крупный проект, перешедший от POW к POS, технически не является полностью децентрализованным ввиду премайна (через который финансировался запуск проекта) и степени влияния основателей.

Практические следствия такой концентрации власти уже проявлялись в виде откатов состояния блокчейна и случаев принудительного изменения протокола меньшинством, обладающим наибольшим количеством голосов.

Следовательно, предложение о переходе к Ethereum 2.0 могло быть выдвинуто и проголосовано таким образом, чтобы гарантировать успех. Более того, Ethereum можно финансировать и управлять им аналогично подобно любому масштабному корпоративному проекту.

Здесь, возможно, стоит уточнить, что я не обязательно отговариваю от использования, создания или инвестирования в какой бы то ни было альткойн или криптовалютную платформу. Речь лишь о понимании разницы между этими протоколами и Биткойном, а также связанных с этим рисков. Выбор в конечном счете каждый должен делать сам.

Однако можно с полной уверенностью сказать, что утверждение Greenpeace о том, что эти люди могут изменить код Биткойна по своему усмотрению и заставить сеть работать по новым правилам, совершенно неверно. Они не могут. Как не могут этого сделать и банки Уолл-стрит, на которые ссылаются авторы видео, — это настолько странное заявление для тех, кто понимает Биткойн как протокол и как сеть, что на него даже довольно сложно как-то ответить по существу — возможно, лучше просто отмахнуться.

Оригинальная уайтпейпер и код Биткойна поражают воображение.

Обычно при разработке ПО код проходит через сотни итераций, исправлений и улучшений в течение длительного периода времени, прежде чем продукт примет форму жизнеспособного кандидата на релиз.

В случае с Биткойном этот процесс был не только относительно быстрым, но и первоначальный код был настолько невероятно надежным, что исправлений потребовалось совсем немного. Как можно было получить такой объем корректного кода, протокол и алгоритмическое управление с такой предусмотрительностью, откровенно говоря, почти необъяснимо. Однако это правда.

Но и при этом, многие изменения уже были сделаны и еще множества можно ожидать в будущем, однако реализовать эти изменения трудно и потребует много времени. Это обнадеживает. В сети, где ежедневно совершаются сделки на миллиарды долларов, а рыночная капитализация которой составляет триллионы долларов, не может быть никаких рисков.

Процесс изменения кода Bitcoin Core хорошо документирован на GitHub, и я не хочу повторять то же самое здесь. Но есть два примера, которые я бы хотел привести, чтобы показать, насколько хорошо Биткойн защищен от злоумышленников, ошибок и даже непродуманных обновлений.

Первый — это знаменитая «война» вокруг размера блоков в 2015–2017 гг.

По сути, речь шла о предложении повысить пропускную способность сети за счет увеличения размера блоков, изначально ограниченного 1 МБ.

История была захватывающая, но по сути она свелась к созданию прецедента, когда даже влиятельные лица и биткойн-майнеры, контролировавшие 80% хешрейта, не смогли изменить протокол без пользовательского принятия этих изменений.

«Войну» за размер блока в итоге выиграли тысячи независимых пользователей, несогласных с изменениями, которые им пытались навязать. Пользователи в подавляющем большинстве просто не стали обновлять узлы до предлагаемой версии, тем самым заблокировав принятие новой версии протокола.

История была очень напряженной, на кону стояло само будущее Биткойна, но в конце концов она закончилась так, как и должно было. Изменения не должны реализовываться грубой силой, и с тех пор у сообщества и всех интересующихся есть железобетонный аргумент в пользу этого утверждения.

Второй пример не настолько масштабный, однако более свежий.

Разработчик Bitcoin Core по имени Jeremy Rubin в апреле 2022 года предложил довольно значительное изменение в коде Биткойна через BIP (от Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) 119.

Рассказывать о деталях этого BIP здесь, наверное, не совсем уместно; достаточно будет сказать, что оно содержит несколько спорных моментов и подразумевает некоторые проблемы с безопасностью. Подобные «предложения по улучшению Биткойна» — тоже никакая не редкость: они часто вносятся, обсуждаются сообществом, получают развитие и включаются в основную кодовую базу или отбрасываются со временем.

Но конкретно это предложение вызвало серьезную реакцию, поскольку Рубин фактически попытался провести его в очень сжатые сроки и без соблюдения надлежащих процедур.

Вкратце, эта попытка не увенчалась успехом: и хотя она может существовать в виде предложения, угроза внесения изменений в код Bitcoin Core в обход явного консенсуса всех заинтересованных сторон в очередной раз была предотвращена еще до того, как что-то успело произойти.

Без консенсуса сети претворить такие изменения в жизнь практически невозможно.

В этом и состоит основная мысль этого поста.

Что действительно интересно, так это то, как эта кампания против Биткойна вообще была «выпущена в эфир» и, что удивительно, до сих пор не удалена?

Крис Ларсен, человек с глубокими карманами и значительным влиянием в криптовалютной среде, должен знать, что в таком виде внесение таких изменений невозможно, а заявления доказательно ложны и постыдны.

Сама маркетинговая кампания, что неудивительно, уже стала посмешищем, и, возможно, даже имеет некоторые шансы стать маркетинговой катастрофой для Greenpeace, как New Coke стала таковой для Coca-Cola в 1985 году.

Можете ли вы представить себе организацию, которая выступает за мир, единство и защиту окружающей среды, а также за принудительное изменение p2p сети, основанное на некачественных данных и способное не только повредить перспективам достижения нулевого выброса в будущем, но и еще впустую потратить $5 миллионов долларов на заведомо тщетную попытку доказать возможность такого изменения?

Но как бы это ни отозвалось на Greenpeace и их репутации в будущем, в одном можно быть уверенным: для Биткойна это не имеет никакого значения.
